For the most part, they are like big stuffed animals that you can put together and put in a drawer or drawers and have your students read them at their leisure. But they have some common problems and here are some of them.The biggest problem is in the fact that they're huge. Yes, there's a thesis statement in them, but there's a high number of them for each topic. Sometimes students don't even have time to look over the whole sample book at once. So they sort of end up pulling them out one by one and only reading the highlights.This is also the case with arguments. Students will read the arguments of some experts and they'll only think about the highlighted portions of those arguments, the parts where the teacher has included 'gotcha' moments to test their abilities. By the time they get to the part where they actually read the entire book, they've already pulle d them out.Once it's time to start the actual reading, students don't have much of a choice but to go with the prompt. They're not going to be able to take the time to go back and read the arguments. In this way, it seems like they're being punished for doing the wrong thing. As a result, they're not really enjoying their learning experience as much as they should be.One main problem with these books is that they're too long. If you're lucky enough to get a piece of text that's shorter than 1,000 words, then you've got yourself a good idea of how they go. However, if you get an essay that's longer than that, you're more than likely going to struggle with reading them over again.Aside from the length, the other problem is that there are too many 'proof' essays in the conclusion portions. A lot of the times, the teacher is very vague about what kind of evidence should be used to support the thesis. This is fine in certain subjects, but the debate at hand doesn't have that much space t o work with. Instead of being able to decide on their own, students end up relying on the conclusion to give them guidance.The topics can be quite complex and require a lot of common sense to figure out the best way to tackle them. However, most of the time, the teacher isn't giving any kind of direction to do this. For instance, if you're talking about the origins of the Middle East, you might get a lot of reasons to support your particular thesis, but in order to make it stick, you'll need to be able to use a little common sense.Argumentative essay samples can be great for both individual research projects and those in a group setting. But if the main issue is that they're too long, they won't be anything more than glorified exercise books. So, instead of getting overloaded with books, consider how the teachers' demands on this can distract students and make them go through the task slowly.
